Tuskegee Baseball to play in Breast Cancer Awareness game at Paterson Field

The Tuskegee University Baseball team will participate in a special game at Paterson Field Saturday night, as the Golden Tigers will wear pink uniforms in honor of breast cancer awareness. Admission to the game (with first pitch set for 5:00 p.m. against Stillman College) is free, but in place of admission, the Tuskegee University Department of Athletics will be requesting donations to be made benefiting the Joy to Life Foundation.

The Joy to Life Foundation was founded in 2001 by breast cancer survivor Joy Blondheim and her husband, Dickie. The primary purpose of the foundation is breast cancer awareness and prevention through free mammograms and other breast cancer screenings to medically underserved women in Alabama. Since its’ founding over a dozen years ago, Joy to Life has provided over 10,000 mammograms, and over 30 women have been successfully treated for breast cancer.

Tuskegee Athletics chose Joy to Life in particular for the work that they do in the southern part of the state, particularly Macon County. Blondheim says that the organization has helped several women in Macon County throughout the years, and that the organization sees the game as a positive way to let women know about the ways that they can prevent breast cancer, and treat it if they have been diagnosed.

The game will begin a three-game home stand for the Golden Tigers, as they look to improve from their 7-9 record to start the season. After initially going 4-0 to begin the year, Tuskegee dropped six consecutive games between Lynn University in Florida at Talladega College of the NAIA (also including the 2013 home opener at Paterson Field) before sweeping a three-game series in Atlanta against Morehouse College. Last weekend, Tuskegee fell back below .500 as Kentucky State earned a three-game sweep in Frankfort.

The series for Tuskegee will wrap up Sunday, with a doubleheader against the Stillman Tigers set to begin at Noon. The Golden Tigers will then be on the road for the first six games in March before beginning a season-long 16-game home stretch at Paterson Field. Those games will begin against Albany State on March 29.
