Tuskegee Baseball begins season with two-game sweep of Paine College
Last Saturday officially marked the beginning of baseball season at Tuskegee University, with the Golden Tigers earning a pair of victories over SIAC conference rival Paine College in Augusta, GA. Tuskegee, under the tutelage of Head Coach Montressa Kirby, earned a 15-7 victory in before returning in the second game and earning another eight-run victory with a 10-2 win.
In the first inning of the season, both teams scored three runs each, but the Golden Tigers would wait until the sixth inning to explode and score six runs to build distance and separate. Cash Oliver hit a three-run homerun during the inning, as he went a perfect 4-for-4 on the day while also driving in a total of four RBIs on three hits.
Cameron Summers also had a great game as the starting pitcher, as he earned the victory in the first game after pitching five innings and earning a strikeout while allowing just four hits that led to six runs. Summers was also hot on the offensive end, while going 5-for-5 in the batter’s box, with a total of five RBIs on two hits.
In the second game, Tevin Worthy earned the pitching victory, throwing five innings while just allowing the two runs off of a total eight hits. The Golden Tigers scored a total of five runs over the course of the second and third innings, and Samuel Rodney was the leading batter. He finished the second game going 3-for-4, with three RBIs and two runs scored on three hits. Paine managed to score the only runs of the contest for the home team in the fourth inning, but TU was able to match that score in the inning, and scored three additional runs during the fifth and sixth innings to leave East Georgia with the sweep.
The Golden Tigers take their 2-0 record to Coastal North Carolina this Saturday to play against Elizabeth City State University, which will be beginning their season with a three-game set against Tuskegee. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday, beginning at Noon EST, with the third game being played Sunday at 1:00 p.m. EST.
