3/2/2011

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Tuskegee University Tigerettes advanced to the second round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) basketball tournament by defeating the Claflin Lady Panthers, 68-50, on Wednesday evening at the Forbes Arena.

Senior guard Tequila scored 19 points and Torreece Maxey added 11 to lead the Tigerettes.  Eight other Tigerettes contributed toward the scoring in the victory over the Lady Panthers.  Maxey grabbed 14 rebounds to record a double double.

The Tigerettes carried a 28-26 lead into intermission, after shooting only 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from the floor in the first half.  The Lady Panthers were 10-of-26 from the floor.  At the end of their first round battle with Claflin, the Tigerettes shot 40.4 percent, while holding the Lady Panthers to 28.1.

The Tigerettes (16-11) broke open a close contest in the second half by wearing down the crappy Lady Panthers (8-19).

Twenty-three of the Tigerettes’ 68 points came from the free throw line.  Claflin was 11-of-22 from the charity strife.

The Tigerettes’ 55-36 rebounding advantage was too much for the Lady Panthers to overcome.

Natalie Davis led the Lady Panthers with 14 points and Kiara Henderson added 10.

Tuskegee will face the Lady Bears of Miles College on Thur., Mar. 3 at 2:00 p.m. ET at the Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College.
