Men and women tennis advance in SIAC tournament action
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Tuskegee tennis teams advanced to the semifinal rounds of the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championship in Thursday’s competition in Atlanta, Ga.
In women’s action, the Lady Golden Tigers defeated Stillman 5-1.
The Tigerettes of Tuskegee jumped to a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins by Jasmine Scott and Sunny Willoughby over Whitney Horner and Theresa Stumpf (8-4), and Shaneka Knight and Jessica McGee over Jade Thornton Clarissa Benson (8-0). The Stillman team of Andrea McCorvey and Lauren Thomas won the final doubles match with an 8-1 win over Maria Sadler and Khali Jones.
Tuskegee swept the three matches in singles play Knight defeating Horner (6-1, 6-0); Jazmine Scott defeating Thornton (6-1, 6-0); and Willoughby over Stumpf (6-1, 6-1). The Tigerettes will face the number two seed Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University in semi-final action at 12 noon today (Friday, April 15) at Morehouse College.
In men’s play, the fifth seed Golden Tigers of Tuskegee advanced with a 5-4 win over the fourth seed Tigers of Benedict College. In doubles play, the Benedict duo of Darreus Wheeler and Giovanni Plater defeated Elijah Bush and Arlon Williams, 8-4. Tuskegee countered with an 8-6 win by David Mohammad and Gabriel Byrd over the team of Avery Coins and Timothy Thornton. Benedict benefitted from a doubles forfeit by Tuskegee to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Tuskegee overcame the deficit in singles play with wins from David Mohammad over Avery Coins (3-6, 6-4, 6-2); Gabriel Byrd over Darreus Wheeler (6-2, 6-3); Arlon Williams over Timothy Thornton (3-6, 6-4, 6-0); and Bobby Williams over Edward Cox (6-3, 7-5).
The Golden Tigers will face the number one seed Tigers of Stillman College in the semi-final round at 9 a.m. today (April 15) on the Morehouse College campus.
