Golden Tigers post tournament win over Morehouse
ATLANTA, Ga. – Third-seeded and defending SIAC Tournament titleholder, Tuskegee (19-8), defeated Morehouse 78-72 on Thursday evening at Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College. With the win, the Golden Tigers advanced to the semifinals of the 78th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament.
Senior guard Lorell Friend led the Golden Tigers with 23 points and Andrea Nelson and Calvin Thomas added 16 and 14, respectively. Thomas and Joshua Eichelberger each pulled down six rebounds.
Tuskegee’s junior forward Aaron Ragsdale sustained an injury early in the first half and was lost for the game.
The Maroon Tigers (14-14) took a 35-33 lead into halftime, but the Golden Tigers tied the score on a jumper by Nelson at 19:52 in the second half. The Maroon Tigers took the lead at 17:50 and would not relinquish it until Friend’s free throw tied the score 52-52 at 8:49. Thomas’ layup at 8:10 gave the Golden Tigers a 54-52 advantage and they would never trail again in the game.
The Golden Tigers shot 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the floor and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line. The Maroon Tigers were successful on 23-of-53 field goals (43.4 percent) and 21-of-29 free throws (72.4 percent).
All 15 of the dressed players for Tuskegee saw action in the victory over Morehouse. It was the Golden Tigers’ third win over the Maroon Tigers this year.
The Golden Tigers will meet Stillman in the semifinals on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. ET at Forbes Arena. The two teams split during the regular season, each winning on their home court. Stillman won 82-75 at Tuscaloosa and Tuskegee won 90-76 at the James Center in Tuskegee.
