Golden Tigers look to earn third conference win in last four games
After ending the 2012 portion of their schedule with a rough 1-8 start, the Tuskegee University men’s basketball team has quietly rebounded to win two out of their last three games to improve to 3-9 heading into Thursday night’s game against Fort Valley State University.
An 82-73 victory over Paine College snapped a four-game losing streak over the Golden Tigers, as team scoring leader Javier McKinney once again led the way with a 17-point outing on six-of-nine shooting in the game played Jan. 3. He was one of four TU players to score in double digits, as Calvin Thomas (13 points), Richard Dixon and Shaquille Cook (12 points each) managed to also make significant contributions on the offensive side of the basketball. Cook also had a team high seven rebounds.
The victory was a significant rebound from what was the worst loss of the season for the Golden Tigers, as they suffered a 107-63 loss to Alabama-Huntsville Dec. 30th. The other losses for the TU men came from Florida Southern (88-82 on Dec. 17) and Eckerd College (97-69 on Dec. 19). The losing streak began in a nationally televised game against Division I powerhouse Michigan State in a 92-56 loss Dec. 15.
Another stinging loss would come in Atlanta on Jan. 5, as Morehouse defeated Tuskegee 79-51. Richard Dixon led the way for TU with a team high 11 points, and McKinney had a rare off-night in which he only scored nine points on four-of-15 shooting from the field. The reigning SIAC Regular Season Champions would then get earn another victory at Albany State in a 72-55 victory in a game played Jan. 7. McKinney’s slump continued, as he only scored four points, but Cook would have a monster game for TU. He finished with 21 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Coach Leon Douglas’ team will be back inside the friendly confines of Chappie James Center, when they play against Fort Valley State in a contest scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Thursday. The Wildcats are one of only three teams still remaining with an undefeated conference record (4-3 overall; 2-0 in SIAC).
A special back-to-school dance will be held after the game inside Logan Hall until 1:00 a.m. Admission to the postgame jubilee will require a $5 entry fee.
