4/25/2011

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Tuskegee baseball team completed a sweep of the three-game conference series with LeMoyne-Owen on Sunday evening at Washington Field.  The Golden Tigers won the single game on Sunday 19-2, after posting wins over the visiting Magicians on Saturday, 16-5 and 5-2.

The Golden Tigers improved their overall record to 16-15 and conference record to 11-4.  It is good enough for a second place finish in the SIAC West for the regular season and a #3 seed in the upcoming tournament.

Game One

Cameron Duncan (2-2), who was the SIAC West Co-Player of the Week for April 11-17, got the win and Herman Boddy took the loss in the Golden Tigers’ 16-5 victory over LeMoyne-Owen in game one on Saturday.  Six different Golden Tigers had three hits each in a 13-hit attack. Bryant Chambliss drove in four runs and Gene Stewart Moody three.  Chambliss and Cash Oliver hit 2-run homers in the second and sixth innings, respectively.   The Golden Tigers scored in each inning, including seven runs in the first inning.

Game two

Prior to this game, Senior Day awards were presented to two seniors:  #7 Maurice Jenkins III (outfielder) and #21 Bryant Chambliss (catcher).  Additionally, pitcher Tavin Clary received the Unsung Hero award, shortstop Jonathan Allen the Academic Award and infielder/pitcher Jeremy Williams was the recipient of the MVP Award.

Coach Montressa Kirby started four reserve players and the Golden Tigers found themselves in a close ballgame with the Magicians.  The Magicians held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Golden Tigers exploded for four big runs to take a 5-2 lead.  William McCrary (3-0), who relieved starting pitcher Tavin Clary in the top of the fifth, got the win in game two.  McCrary pitched 2 1/3 innings.

Gene Stewart Moody ignited the Golden Tigers’ scoring outbreak in the bottom of the sixth with an inside the park grand slam home run.  Moody had two hits and drove in four runs.

Game three

The Golden Tigers pounded the Magicians for 19 hits and 19 runs in a 19-2 win, sealing a second place finish in the SIAC West.  William Buford had four hits and four RBI’s.  Jonathan Allen and Jeremy Williams each had three hits.  Williams scored three runs and had six RBI’s.  Starting pitcher Darrion Stubbs picked up his third win of the season.  Sixteen Golden Tigers saw action in the game.
