2012 SIAC Basketball Tournament Brackets Announced

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announces the seeding for the 2012 SIAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament, which will take place Tue., Feb. 28 through Sat., Mar. 3 at Frank L. Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College.

Tuskegee, coached by Leon Douglas, earns the No.1 seed in the men’s field after finishing with a 16-8 record in the SIAC, 16-10 overall, to capture the regular season title. Senior forward Joshua Eichelberger and junior guard Calvin Thomas lead the Golden Tigers, who will have a bye in the first round. Tuskegee will look to win their second tournament title in three years.

Other teams receiving a first-round bye include No. 2 seed LeMoyne-Owen, No. 3 seed Clark Atlanta, and No. 4 seed Benedict.

Fort Valley State, coached by Lonnie Bartley, captures the regular season title and earns the top seed in the women’s field with an 18-4 record in the SIAC, 20-6 overall. The Lady Wildcats are led by seniors Jasmine Birdsong and Yasheeka Jones. Fort Valley State, who will have a bye in the first round, will look to win their second consecutive tournament title and their third in the last four years.

Also receiving a bye in the first round will be No. 2 seed Stillman, No. 3 seed Tuskegee, and No. 4 Benedict.

The first day of the 2012 tournament (February 28th) will feature four women’s games: #6 Miles vs. #11 Paine at 10 a.m., #5 Clark Atlanta vs. #12 Lane at 12 p.m., #8 LeMoyne-Owen vs. #9 Kentucky State at 4 p.m., and #7 Albany State vs. #10 Claflin at 6 p.m. as well as two men’s games: #12 Claflin vs. #13 Lane at 2 p.m. (play-in game) and #8 Fort Valley State vs. #9 Miles at 8 p.m.
